Lisht, located south of Saqqara, was the royal necropolis for the early 12th Dynasty. The site contains two major pyramids: one built by Amenemhat I and the other by his son Senusret I. These pyramids, constructed from mudbrick with limestone casing, reflect a return to pyramid building after a lapse during the First Intermediate Period. Lisht’s layout echoes Old Kingdom traditions but also introduces new design elements. Around the pyramids are numerous mastabas and tombs of high officials, emphasizing the central role of royal patronage. Excavations have revealed papyri, inscriptions, and burial goods, offering insight into early Middle Kingdom political and religious life.
