The pyramid of Amenemhat III at Hawara, built during the 12th Dynasty, is one of the most significant Middle Kingdom monuments. Though its exterior now appears as a mound, the pyramid once stood tall with limestone casing and featured an incredibly intricate substructure. Its internal passageways and traps aimed to deter tomb robbers. Adjacent to the pyramid was the legendary “Labyrinth,” described by ancient writers as a vast, multi-roomed structure that rivaled even the pyramids in splendor. Unfortunately, most of the labyrinth and the pyramid’s upper structure have been lost or dismantled over centuries. Still, Hawara remains a key site for understanding Middle Kingdom funerary practices and architectural evolution.
