Located north of Giza, Abu Rawash was the burial site of Pharaoh Djedefre, son of Khufu. His pyramid was originally built on a high plateau, possibly intended to surpass Khufu’s in elevation. Though heavily ruined—mainly due to stone removal in later periods—it once featured a granite-lined burial chamber and complex layout. The site also included boat pits and statues of the king. Archaeological evidence suggests Djedefre may have chosen this site to distance his legacy from his father’s or for religious reasons. Despite its poor preservation, Abu Rawash remains important for understanding early Fourth Dynasty pyramid development and experimentation in royal funerary traditions.
